Getting a new camera, dusting off an old one or simply wanting to take better photos with your smartphone can be good motivation to improve your photography skills.
With the ongoing growth in the online world and the fact that we are a visual creature the need for good imaging is also continuing to grow
That just means that having good photography skills is just going to be a part of the skills of value
Where to start, how to start, what to do to improve your skills can be both confusing and daunting, so taking a structured approach to improving your photography skills could be just the ticket.
So getting hold of something like The Photographers Playbook may well be just what you need to get you on the road to taking your photography to the next level.
Getting advice form a bunch of different people will probably result in all sorts of recommendations about improving your skills, but there are really one 3 that you should focus on;
- Shoot regularly, shoot often
- Shoot something you're not comfortable or good at
- Stop thinking about gear and shoot with what you have now
So how do these 3 things amount to better photography?
Firstly shooting regularly and often means that you'll become more and more familiar with the fundamentals of photography and your own camera; exposure (ISO), shutter speed, aperture, or the exposure triangle as its often referred to
It will also mean that you will develop your photography muscles and start to see options and opportunities in the environments and locations that you go to
Secondly capturing images of something your not comfortable with (don't normally shoot or don't like shooting) forces you to build your photographers eye and also work out what styles aren't really your area. Too often people overlook the fact that to be good at something you should probably stop doing something else that's drawing you away from what you should be focussing on
Lastly just grabbing your camera and capturing stuff, without thinking too much about the camera in your hand, whether it's good enough, big enough, fast enough or whatever, is the best way to shoot. Work with what you have, from where you are and the rest will come
